Christina Cipriano, PhD: School Leaders with High Emotional Intelligence Matter

Dr. Cipriano and her colleagues found that leader emotional intelligence translated into an overall healthier whole-school climate. It is not enough for school leaders to say that SEL is important, rather they needed to provide the guidance and time to support their educators in their own social-emotional development in order to make SEL more effective with students in the classroom.

Dr. Cipriano is an Applied Developmental and Educational Psychologist, and Director of the Education Collaboratory at Yale. Her research focuses on the role of social and emotional learning (SEL) in the promotion of pathways to optimal developmental outcomes for traditionally marginalized student and teacher populations.
