Christina Cipriano, PhD: Family Engagement a Top Priority for SEL for Diverse Language Learners

SEL for diverse language learners cannot simply be a translation of emotions, words, and terms because it wouldn’t take into account the rich variability of cultural and linguistic nuances. To help learners from all cultures and backgrounds, the first and primary part of the SEL program approach includes full family engagement instead of considering it as an after-thought or add-on.

Dr. Cipriano is an Applied Developmental and Educational Psychologist, and Director of the Education Collaboratory at Yale. Her research focuses on the role of social and emotional learning (SEL) in the promotion of pathways to optimal developmental outcomes for traditionally marginalized student and teacher populations.
