Including William Tucker was so important for both Nicole and I mean based on a lot of the research that she was doing, we realize, yes, this is an important name and how come we don’t know this name? We should know that this is the first black child born here, and we should know that the name of the ship that our people were brought over on is the White Lion. All of that was so important to put a name and to be able to trace back some history of where you come from and some concrete place in person was important for us. And so when I learned that history, which I did not know until researching for the book with Nicole, I knew that that had to be in there. That this idea also that with so much strife and pain and horrificness that was happening, folks decided to still have children means to me that they also saw a future and wanted a future and wanted this world to continue and keep going. And that says something about faith and perseverance that we wanted that to be present on the page.
