So Maya lost her voice. She stopped speaking for five years due to this abuse that happened to her and her fear that her voice had somehow caused the death of this person who hurt her. So she stopped speaking, but she read a lot and was taking in all these words. And Ms. Flowers was someone that she speaks of and interviews and in telling her story of a woman who would have poetry books for her to read and realize that Maya was gravitating to those poems, that her eyes would kind of light up, and that she was really loving those books. And so as a way to encourage her to speak, she would say to Maya, it seems like you really love poetry, but I don’t know. Cause poets say their poems out loud. Poems are meant to be heard. You got to say the poem if you really love the poem. And that is kind of what pushed Maya to open her mouth and start talking and speaking again. And she did it in private. She had to go try it out a little bit before she was speaking publicly. But yeah, Ms. Flowers and her books of poems were what kind of ignited Maya to start speaking again.
