Katherine Applegate is the author of many books for young readers, including the 2013 Newbery Medal winner The One and Only Ivan, Crenshaw, Home of the Brave, Wishtree, the Roscoe Riley Rules series, Endling, and with her husband, Michael Grant, the Animorphs series. In this interview, Applegate talks about life-changing books for reluctant readers (including kids with dyslexia), writing “first-person gorilla”, tackling tough topics, how books can change communities, and much more.

Biography

Applegate won the 2013 Newbery Medal for The One and Only Ivan. The story is written from the viewpoint of a gorilla living in a glass cage in a shopping mall. The Newbery award committee said, “Katherine Applegate gives readers a unique and unforgettable gorilla’s-eye-view of the world that challenges the way we look at animals and at ourselves.”

Applegate was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and has lived in Texas, Florida, California, Minnesota, Illinois, and North Carolina. After living in Pelago, Italy for a year, she moved back to Irvine, California, where she lives with her husband, writer Michael Grant, two children, and assorted pets.
