Biography
Cece Bell an author/illustrator of children’s books including the Rabbit and Robot stories, the Sock Monkey series, Itty Bitty, and the graphic novel memoir, El Deafo, which won a Newbery Honor and the Geisel Award in 2015.
Bell grew up in Salem, Viriginia and drank a lot of limeades at the Brooks-Byrd Pharmacy downtown. She met her husband, fellow children’s book writer (and sometimes collaborator) Tom Angleberger, at the College of William and Mary, where they were both art majors. Bell went on to get a graduate degree in illustration and design at Kent State University.
Bell has worked as a freelance illustrator for all kinds of nutty projects, but is now a full-time author and illustrator. She lives in an old church in Virginia and works in a two-story barn right next door. Bell enjoys moments of hilarity with her husband, along with three lady dogs and two youngsters. Is the object that Brain finds an eyeball or is it an egg, as Chick says? Can Chick — or anyone — convince him otherwise? Silliness abounds in image and word in this graphic novel by the creator of Newbery Honor winning El Deafo (opens in a new window).
Chick and Brain: Egg or Eyeball?
In this funny, poignant graphic novel memoir, Bell chronicles her hearing loss at a young age and her subsequent experiences with the Phonic Ear, a very powerful — and very awkward — hearing aid. The Phonic Ear gives Cece the ability to hear — sometimes things she shouldn’t — but also isolates her from her classmates. After some trouble, she is finally able to harness the power of the Phonic Ear and become “El Deafo, Listener for All.” And more importantly, declare a place for herself in the world and find the friend she’s longed for.
El Deafo
A donkey announces excitedly, “I yam a donkey!” Unfortunately the donkey’s audience happens to be a yam, and one who is particular about sloppy pronunciation and poor grammar. An escalating series of misunderstandings leaves the yam furious and the clueless donkey bewildered by the yam’s growing (and amusing) frustration.
I Yam a Donkey!
Itty Bitty is a very, very tiny dog. But when he finds an enormous bone, he goes straight to work, gnawing out doors and windows and hollowing out the entire inside. When his work is done, however, his cavernous house still feels incomplete. Where can he find some itty-bitty things that will make this bone a home?
Itty Bitty
Rabbit’s carefully planned sleepover with Robot doesn’t work out exactly as he imagined in this offbeat tale about two comically mismatched friends — a rabbit who likes to be in control and an obliging robot who calmly keeps their friendship humming.

The famous toy actor, Sock Monkey, has been nominated for an Oswald Award. But to attend the ceremony, he must do something terrifying — he must take a bath. This unapologetically goofy picture book reveals that the legendary ride to town (and the whole macaroni thing) was all suggested by Mr. Doodle’s overeager pony. A historical note ends this colorful, comical take on a nonsensical old song.
