Reading Rockets offers a wealth of reading strategies, lessons, and activities designed to help young children learn how to read and read better. Our reading resources assist parents, teachers, and other educators in working with struggling readers who require additional help in reading fundamentals and comprehension skills development.

About our expert

  • Joanne Meier, Ph.D.

    Joanne Meier provides research guidance for Reading Rockets. Dr. Meier has more than 15 years of experience in early childhood education. She served on the faculty at the University of Virginia where she trained reading specialists and future classroom teachers. In addition, Dr. Meier co-authored three Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) instruments. Dr. Meier has conducted research and published in several professional journals, and was previously an elementary school teacher in Fairfax County, Virginia.
